Buses and furgons

Cheap, frequent between towns, and thinning out exactly where the good roads start. The furgon is the system, and it runs on departure times rather than on timetables.

  1. Learn the one departure that mattersThe furgon to Theth leaves Shkodër at 07:00 from the Rozafa Hotel, costs 1,200 lek, and takes about two and a half hours. It is the model for how the whole system works: a named departure point, an early hour, and a fixed small fare.01
  2. Expect towns, not sightsThe network connects Tirana, Shkodër, Berat, Gjirokastër, Sarandë and the rest reliably. It does not reach the Riviera's bays, the Osum canyon, Bënjë or Karavasta, and no amount of planning changes that.02
  3. Check the month before relying on the coastSummer furgons and buses link Vlorë, Dhërmi, Himarë, Borsh and Sarandë along the SH8, and they thin out sharply once the season ends. An October coast trip by bus is a different proposition from an August one.03
  4. Ask locally rather than onlineDeparture points move and schedules are not centrally published. A guesthouse is a better source for tomorrow's furgon than any website, including this one.04

Asked about this

Is there a train?

Not one worth planning around. Albania is a road country, and the choice in practice is between a hire car and the furgon network.

Can I do the Riviera by bus?

You can move along it in summer, between the villages on the SH8. The beaches are below the road, so you will walk down and back up, and out of season the services largely stop.

How far ahead do I book?

You do not, for most furgons: you turn up. The exception is anything tied to the Koman ferry, which sells out days ahead in July and August.
