June or September?

The two shoulder months, and the answer this site gives more often than any other. They are not interchangeable: one is greener and one has warmer water, and the Alps only fully open in one of them.

Side by side

June or September?
 JuneSeptember
The seaWarm from early in the month and warming all through it.At its warmest of the year, having taken all summer to get there.
The AlpsThe Valbonë to Theth pass clears around mid-June, so the first half is a gamble.Fully open, with the clearest air of the season and fewer walkers.
CrowdBuilding. The first week is quiet and the last is not.Falling all month, and gone by the end of it.
What is happeningThe festivals: Kala at Dhërmi, and UNUM at Shëngjin in the first week. The season winding down, which is the point.
The riskBooking the Alps crossing before the pass has actually cleared. The last week, when coastal services start closing without warning.

Our answer

September, on almost every reading. The sea is warmer than in June, the Alps pass is reliably open rather than probably open, and the crowd is leaving instead of arriving. June wins only if you came for one of the festivals, or if you want the country green rather than burnt.

IfYou want to walk Valbonë to ThethSeptember. In early June the pass may still be under snow.
IfYou want the country greenJune. By September the south is dry.
IfYou are here for Kala or UNUMJune, and book everything early.
IfYou want the warmest waterSeptember, which beats June on sea temperature everywhere on this coast.
