Decision
Sarandë or Vlorë?
The Riviera's two cities, one at each end of it. Both are bases rather than destinations, and which one works depends entirely on which direction you are travelling.
Side by side
| Sarandë | Vlorë | |
|---|---|---|
| What is within half an hour | Butrint one way, Ksamil the other, Gjirokastër an hour inland. | Orikum and the Karaburun boats, with the Llogara climb starting just beyond. |
| Crowd at peak | High, with the waterfront described as strained. | Lower than Sarandë, and it empties out of season. |
| Beer in a bar | 250-400 lek in 2026, against 150-250 lek in 2023. | Not separately published; the coast-wide 2026 range applies. |
| Getting there from abroad | A 30 to 45 minute hydrofoil from Corfu, though a Corfu hire car cannot come over. | By road. Vlora's airport had no scheduled commercial service as of July 2026. |
| Out of season | Ionian Seaways and Joy Lines run the Corfu route year round on a reduced winter timetable. | A working city that keeps working, rather than a resort that shuts. |
Our answer
Sarandë if you are coming from Corfu or heading for Butrint, Vlorë if you are driving the Riviera north to south. Sarandë has the better half-hour radius and the worse summer; Vlorë has the Karaburun boats and the pass. Neither is a place to spend a week.
IfYou are arriving by ferry from CorfuSarandë. It is the port, and the hydrofoil is 30 to 45 minutes.
IfYou are driving the coast from the northVlorë, and start the Riviera the next morning over Llogara.
IfYou want Butrint and KsamilSarandë, which is half an hour from both.
IfYou are travelling out of seasonVlorë. Sarandë's waterfront is built for a summer that is not happening.
