Rated high at peak with moderate to high price inflation and heavy construction, and described as strained rather than manageable.
Quieter instead: Himarë.
Getting there
boat, car, bus. The cleanest foot-passenger entry to southern Albania is the ferry from Corfu: 30 to 45 minutes on the hydrofoil, 55 to 70 on the car ferry. A hire car cannot be brought across from Corfu, which catches people out in exactly one direction.
Parking: Paid parking above the waterfront; the promenade itself is largely pedestrian.
Photography
Best light: golden, sunset, blue.
The bay faces west and the Lëkurësi castle above the town is the position for both the sunset and the blue hour over the port. Check drone requirements with the AAC before travelling.
Drone: not confirmed. Albania's registration requirement is reported differently by every secondary source, so verify with the AAC before you fly.
Sarandë is where the south becomes easy. Butrint is half an hour one way, Ksamil twenty minutes the other, Gjirokastër an hour inland, and Corfu is a 30 to 45 minute hydrofoil across the channel. As a base it does more work than anywhere else on the coast.
As a place it is a working port that grew fast, and the survey that rates Ksamil severe rates Sarandë high and strained: prices up, construction heavy, the waterfront full through July and August. It is not the town it was and it is not pretending to be.
One detail catches people every season. The Corfu ferry is the neatest way to arrive on foot, but a hire car picked up on Corfu cannot be brought across. If a car is part of the plan, it has to be rented on this side.
