Getting there

car, hike. About forty minutes northeast of Tirana, with the last stretch on an unsealed road that an ordinary car manages in dry conditions and does not in wet ones. From the road end it is a short steep walk up to the ridge. There is no public transport; taxis and tours run from the city.

Parking: Informal parking at the road end, which is a widening rather than a car park.

Best light: morning, golden.

The reservoir sits in a narrow limestone gorge and reads best from the ridge with the sun low enough to separate the walls, which in practice means early or late. The water is a strong green in spring and drops through the summer. Check drone requirements with the AAC before travelling.

Drone: not confirmed. Albania's registration requirement is reported differently by every secondary source, so verify with the AAC before you fly.

Bovilla supplies Tirana's drinking water, which is why it is a reservoir in a gorge with nothing built on it, and it is the closest thing the city has to a mountain day out. Forty minutes of driving and twenty minutes of climbing put you on a ridge with the water directly below.

The last part of the drive is what decides whether the day works. It is unsealed, and it is the reason the useful window here runs roughly March to November rather than all year: in the wet months an ordinary car has no business on it.

Go early. The ridge is exposed, there is no shade on the walk, and by mid-morning in July the whole thing is hot and hazy. It is also a weekend destination for Tirana, so a Tuesday is a different outing from a Sunday.
