Getting there

air, car, bus. Tirana International is the only Albanian airport with scheduled commercial service: Vlora has none as of July 2026 and Kukës has had none since 2024. Hire cars from the airport can usually cross into Kosovo, Montenegro and North Macedonia for a fee; Greece is restricted.

Parking: Paid parking throughout the centre; the ring road is the pressure point, not the spaces.

The painted blocks read best in flat morning light rather than in sun, and Dajti above the city is the wide view. Drone flying is constrained here: no-fly within 5 km of the airport, and government buildings are off limits. The national registration requirement itself is unclear, so ask the AAC.

Tirana is a logistics fact before it is a destination. It has the only airport in the country with scheduled flights, it sits at the centre of the road network, and almost every itinerary touches it twice. Treat it as a first and last night and it does that job very well.

Given a full day it has more than the reputation suggests: the painted blocks of the centre, Bunk'Art in a real bunker, the pyramid rebuilt as something usable, and the Dajti cable car for the view down over all of it. April to June and September to November are when the terraces are the point.

The one planning trap here is the car. Most local operators allow Kosovo, Montenegro and North Macedonia for a fee and a Green Card, and Greece is restricted or very expensive. Confirm it with your own company in writing before you book, because the policy is per-operator rather than national.
