Gjipe

The best beach in Albania you can only reach on foot or by boat, and the clearest case on this coast of access doing the crowd control that regulation does not.

August: ok. Busy by its own standards, which is still quiet by the coast's.

Getting there

hike, boat. Never by car. A rough track ends above the gorge and a 25 to 30 minute walk drops from near the Dhërmi monastery to the beach, or a boat taxi runs from Dhërmi beach. It sits about 4.5 km south of Dhërmi, and it is also a stage of the Albanian Coastal Trail, which runs Dhërmi to Gjipe to Jal to Livadh, 12.6 km and about four hours end to end.

Parking: Informal parking at the track end above the gorge, then walk.

Photography

Best light: morning, golden.

The canyon walls shade the beach early and late, so the swimmable light and the photogenic light are not the same hours. Check drone requirements with the AAC before travelling.

Drone: not confirmed. Albania's registration requirement is reported differently by every secondary source, so verify with the AAC before you fly.

Gjipe is the gap between the Riviera's two halves: a limestone canyon that opens onto a beach with no road to it. You leave a car on a rough track above the gorge, walk down for twenty-five to thirty minutes, and arrive on pebble the colour of jade. The alternative is a boat taxi from Dhërmi, four and a half kilometres north.

The absence of a road is the whole product. A basic bar or two, free camping, and no loungers worth the name, on a coast where the comparable bays now carry beach clubs and a price list. Nobody legislated that; the walk did it.

Plan the walk out rather than the walk in. The climb is on the return, in the afternoon, and it is the part people underestimate. In July and August that argues for an early start or a boat one way.

The walk itself has its own page: the canyon is a hike as much as an approach, and it is written up separately.
