The castle takes the coaches; the upper lanes stay quiet even in August.
Getting there
car, bus. On the main road south, an hour from Sarandë and about three hours from Tirana. The old town is steep, cobbled and hard on tyres and ankles alike.
Parking: Paid parking near the bazaar; the castle has its own car park at the top.

Best light: golden, sunset.
The roofs are slate and they only separate from each other in raking light, so the town is an early-morning or late-afternoon subject. The castle terrace looks north over the valley and is the sunset position. Check drone requirements with the AAC before travelling.

Gjirokastër is the harder of Albania's two stone towns and the more rewarding one. Where Berat is white plaster and windows, this is grey slate: roofs, walls and streets all cut from the same stone, stepping down a slope so steep that the lanes are effectively staircases with cars parked on them.
The fortress at the top is the largest in the country and holds a captured American aircraft and a weapons museum that costs extra. The view from its terrace over the Drino valley is the one everyone photographs, and it is best in the last hour of light.
The south around it is the reason to give the town more than a night: Përmet's thermal baths at Bënjë, the Lengarica canyon beside them, and Butrint and the coast an hour the other way.
