This is where the coaches stop when they visit the stone town, which concentrates a whole day's load onto one terrace between mid-morning and mid-afternoon.
Getting there
car. A steep cobbled climb up from the bazaar, or a drive round to the castle's own car park at the top. Most people underestimate the walk: it is short and it is steep.
Parking: Car park at the top of the castle road.

Best light: golden, sunset.
The terrace looks north over the Drino valley and takes the last hour of light. Inside, the gun gallery is a long dark vault that wants a steady hand rather than a bright day. Check drone requirements with the AAC before travelling.
Drone: not confirmed. Albania's registration requirement is reported differently by every secondary source, so verify with the AAC before you fly.
The castle is the largest in Albania and the reason the town below it is shaped the way it is. It runs the length of the ridge with a vaulted gun gallery down one side, a clock tower at the end, and a terrace looking straight down the Drino valley.
Inside are the American aircraft that has sat on its terrace since the 1950s, the remains of a communist-era prison, and a weapons museum on a separate ticket. Entry is 400 lek, with another 200 lek if you want the museum.
It takes about an hour and a half at a slow pace. The terrace is the part worth timing: it faces north over the valley, and in the last hour of light it is the best view in the south.
