The two sides of the Albanian Alps, separated by a 1,795 m pass. They are reached differently, they are open for slightly different windows, and most people should not be choosing between them at all.

Sleep on both sides. The 15 to 17 km crossing between the two valleys is the point of the Albanian Alps, and picking one turns a traverse into an out-and-back. If you truly have one night, take Theth: the road is open longer and the short walks start at the door.

IfYou have three nights or more between mid-June and SeptemberDo both. Ferry to Fierzë, a night in Valbonë, the pass to Theth, and out by road to Shkodër.
IfYou have one night and a carTheth. It is a 2.5 hour drive on a paved road and it does not depend on a boat.
IfYou want the journey as much as the destinationValbonë, arriving on the 09:00 ferry. The gorge crossing is the strongest single leg in northern Albania.
IfYou are travelling in April, May or OctoberNeither for the crossing: the pass is snowbound or turning. Theth alone, if the road has opened.
