Getting there
boat, car, bus. The standard way in is the Koman ferry to Fierzë and a road transfer up the valley, which only works between 15 April and 5 November. Out of season the alternative is the road through Bajram Curri, most easily reached from Kosovo.

The valley floor is a wide braided gravel bed, not a lake, and it reads best from height in the morning before the peaks flatten out. Check drone requirements with the AAC before travelling.

Valbonë is Theth's twin and its opposite. Theth sits in a tight valley you drive into; Valbonë opens out along a river that spends most of the year as a wide white gravel bed with thin threads of water in it. The guesthouses are strung along that floor rather than gathered in a village.
Getting here is the part that decides the trip. Between 15 April and 5 November the Koman ferry runs to Fierzë and a transfer brings you up the valley, which is why Valbonë's season and the ferry's season are the same thing. Outside that window the only reliable approach is the road via Bajram Curri, and almost nobody does it.
Most people should sleep on both sides. The crossing between the two valleys is the point of the Alps section of any Albania trip, and doing it as a day trip from one side means carrying everything twice.
