| Getting in | Two ways in, both with a season. The SH21 from Shkodër to Theth has been paved since 2021 but closes for the winter. The Koman ferry runs to Fierzë, for Valbonë, between 15 April and 5 November. |

Right now, in August: best. Warm, busy guesthouses. Read the whole of August.
Theth and Valbonë sit in two valleys on either side of a pass at 1,795 metres, and the walk between them is why most people come. It is the shortest season in the country: the road opens late in spring, the trail clears around the middle of June, and the first snow on the pass ends it in October.
What follows from that is arithmetic rather than atmosphere. Four usable months, a small stock of guesthouses and one ferry a day in each direction mean July and August book out instead of spreading out. June and September are the same mountains with room in them.
