Getting there

car, bus. Two and a half hours from Shkodër on the SH21, paved the whole way since September 2021. The public furgon leaves the Rozafa Hotel at 07:00; tourist shuttles run later and cost more. In winter the road is closed, and a 4WD getting through is not the same as the road being open.

Theth is the reason most people come north, and the road is the reason most people arrive in the same four months. It was a rough track until 2021 and it is now a paved two-and-a-half-hour drive from Shkodër, which has changed who gets here without changing the winter: the SH21 still shuts around mid-November and reopens when the snow lets it, usually late March or early April.

The village itself is a scatter of stone houses along a river with the church in the middle of them and the Radohima wall behind. Everything people walk to starts here: the Grunas waterfall in a couple of hours, the Blue Eye as a long day, and the crossing to Valbonë over the 1,795 m pass.

It is worth planning around the season rather than around the crowd. Four months of the year the correct answer to whether you can go is no, and it is a closure, not a bad month.
