Getting there

car, bus. Two to two and a half hours from Shkodër on the SH21, which is now paved the whole way. The shuttle leaves Hotel Rozafa at 07:30 and 14:00, and the public furgon runs at similar hours. In winter the road authority closes the road whenever snow or avalanches make it unsafe, with no published season, and a 4WD getting through is not the same as the road being open.

The valley runs between high walls, so the usable light is late morning to mid-afternoon and the golden hour arrives early against the eastern face. Theth is the reason most people come north, and the road is the reason most people arrive in the same four months. It was a rough track until a few years ago and it is now a paved drive of two to two and a half hours from Shkodër, which has changed who gets here without changing the winter: the road authority clears the snow when it can and shuts the road when it cannot, with no published season, and on 5 February 2026 avalanches closed it completely.

The village itself is a scatter of stone houses along a river with the church in the middle of them and the Radohima wall behind. Everything people walk to starts here: the Grunas waterfall in a couple of hours, the Blue Eye as a long day, and the crossing to Valbonë over the 1,795 m pass.

It is worth planning around the season rather than around the crowd. Through the winter the correct answer to whether you can go is usually no, and it turns on the snow and the road authority rather than on a date anyone publishes.
