Getting there

car, bus. About three hours southeast of Tirana through Elbasan and Pogradec, and the nearest Albanian town of any size to the Greek border at Kapshticë. Buses run daily from Tirana, and the centre is walkable once you are here.

A planned grid of low nineteenth-century houses under an outsized cathedral, which gives long straight sightlines that work in raking light. At 850 m the winter air is clear in a way the coast never is. Check drone requirements with the AAC before travelling.

Korçë sits at 850 metres on a plain ringed by mountains, which gives it something no other Albanian town has: a real winter, with snow on the streets and a food culture built around it. It is the one part of the country whose best months for eating are the cold ones.

The centre is a planned nineteenth-century grid of low houses and a boulevard, with an outsized Orthodox cathedral at one end and the National Museum of Medieval Art, which holds the country's icon collection, a short walk from it. The old bazaar behind the boulevard has been restored and is now where the town eats.

The one date that moves the numbers here is the beer festival in mid-August, which ran for its twentieth year in 2026 and is free to get into. Outside that week Korçë is a quiet regional town, and September and October, with the harvest in and the light gone gold, are when it is at its best.
