Korçë sits above 800 metres and has a real winter, which is the first thing separating the south-east from the rest of the country. The town has a boulevard, a cathedral, a brewery, and the best-known beer festival in Albania in the middle of August.

Around it the highlands hold Voskopojë, once one of the largest cities in the Balkans and now a handful of churches in a meadow, and Pogradec on the Albanian shore of Lake Ohrid. This is the one region whose best food months are the cold ones.
