Lake Shkodër

The largest lake in the Balkans, a Ramsar wetland with pelicans on it, five kilometres from a city the whole Alps circuit already passes through, and almost nobody plans a day for it.

August: ok. Hot, and the Alps traffic is passing through town rather than stopping.

The year · August is underlined

Getting there

car, bus. Shirokë, the lakeside village where the shore road, the restaurants and the boats are, sits about 5 km west of Shkodra. The city is dead flat and runs on bicycles, and riding out is the easiest and most local way to reach the water.

Parking: Along the shore road at Shirokë.

Best light: sunrise, golden, blue.

A wide shallow lake under a big sky, so it gives its best at either end of the day and very little in between. Check drone requirements with the AAC before travelling.

Drone: not confirmed. Albania's registration requirement is reported differently by every secondary source, so verify with the AAC before you fly.

Lake Shkodër is the largest lake in the Balkans and a Ramsar-protected wetland with birds on it, pelicans included. Only about a third of it is in Albania. The rest is Montenegro, and the border runs through open water, which is part of why a page about it has to be a page about a shore rather than about a lake.

The shore in question is Shirokë, five kilometres west of a city that almost every northern itinerary already touches twice. That proximity is the argument: the lake is not a detour, it is an afternoon that most people spend sitting in Shkodra instead.

The season here runs on rainfall rather than sea temperature. Shkodra is one of the wettest places in Europe, so spring is green and damp, winter is quiet and wet, and the months worth planning around are May to June and September.

Boats go out from the shore. No fare for any of them could be confirmed, so none is printed here.
