Getting there
car. About an hour and a half south of Berat toward Çorovodë, on roads that are fine and slow. The water section is run by operators out of Berat and Çorovodë with transfers included; there is no way to do it independently.
Parking: At the operator meeting points rather than at the canyon itself.
Photography
Best light: morning, golden.
A narrow gorge, so down on the water the usable light is a couple of hours either side of noon and the rim viewpoints take the ends of the day. Check drone requirements with the AAC before travelling.
Drone: not confirmed. Albania's registration requirement is reported differently by every secondary source, so verify with the AAC before you fly.
The Osum has cut a deep limestone canyon into the hills south of Berat, and the way most people see it is from a raft on the river at the bottom of it.
That is the constraint worth planning around. The rafting season runs roughly March to June because it runs on snowmelt: in March and April the water is high and cold and the trip is a real one, by late June it is dropping, and through July and August there is not enough river to float. The operators simply stop.
Outside the water season the canyon is still a place, reachable on foot at the rim and in parts of the bed, and September and October give it autumn colour with nobody in it. It is not the same outing, and it is worth saying so before you book a hotel in Berat for it.
