Right now, in August: ok. Hot, hazy light. Read the whole of August.
Berat is a UNESCO town of stacked Ottoman windows under a castle that people still live inside, and it anchors the whole middle of the country. Around it are the wine villages, the lakes at Belsh, and the classical site at Apollonia out towards the sea.
The Osum canyon lies to the east and keeps a season of its own: the rafting depends on water level, so it runs in spring and fades through the summer. The town does not, which is why the centre works as a two-night stop in almost any month of the year.
