The plain roads carry farm traffic that stops without warning, and the overtaking culture around it is the main risk on this leg.

- TiranaWhere nearly every Albania trip starts and ends: the only airport with scheduled flights, the road hub, and a first or last night rather than a week.
- Ardenica MonasteryA working Orthodox monastery on a ridge above the Myzeqe plain, half an hour from Apollonia and open when almost nothing else inland is.
- ApolloniaA Greek city on a hill above the Vjosa plain, with a thirteenth-century monastery built out of its stone in the middle of it and almost nobody on the site.
- BeratA UNESCO hillside of stacked Ottoman windows above the Osum, with a castle that is still a lived-in quarter and wine country around it.
The direct run to Berat is quicker than this one. This line goes via Ardenica because the two stops on it are the argument for driving rather than taking a bus: a working thirteenth-century monastery on a ridge over the Myzeqe plain, and, a short detour further west, the Greek city at Apollonia.
Both are quiet in a way Berat is not. The town at the end takes coaches from Tirana all summer; the monastery and the ruins take almost nobody, and they are open in months when the coast is shut.
