What to watch for
This is a mountain road with long tunnels, and a tunnel is where the weather stops but the driving does not. Expect trucks: this is also the freight line into Dibër.
The final stretch runs the border valley within a few kilometres of North Macedonia. Nothing about the road crosses it, but a navigation app rerouting around a closure might try; check that any detour it offers stays on this side.

- TiranaWhere nearly every Albania trip starts and ends: the only airport with scheduled flights, the road hub, and a first or last night rather than a week.
- PeshkopiThermal springs at 35 to 43.5 °C in the least-visited corner of the country, which makes this one of the few Albanian places whose best months are the cold ones.
The road east follows what Wikipedia still calls an ancient caravan route through the eastern highlands of Tirana, along the SH61 to the SH6 in Dibër County. What the encyclopaedia has not caught up with is that the modern road along that line is built: the router measures the drive at 91 kilometres and under two hours, which for anyone who knew this corner of the country before is the whole story in one number.
That number needs its context, because the older figure is still in circulation and still on this site: Peshkopi's own page budgets three hours or more, which is what the journey was before the tunnel road and what it still is for a bus making stops. Both are honest. Plan a car journey on the router's figure and a bus journey on the older one.
The last stretch runs down the Drin valley within sight of North Macedonia, and Peshkopi ends the road the way border towns do: quietly, with the mountains going on regardless. This is the drive that puts Gjallica, the Korab park and Radomirë within reach, and it is the emptiest corridor on this site by some distance.
