What to watch for
The SH1 mixes motorway sections with town sections that are not, and the change is not always signed. Speed limits drop hard through Laç and Lezhë.
Unlit pedestrians and animals on the shoulder after dark, which is the reason to do this leg in daylight.
Fuel
Frequent the whole way. This is the least worrying corridor in the country for fuel, and the last easy one before the Alps.
Stops · in driving order
- TiranaWhere nearly every Albania trip starts and ends: the only airport with scheduled flights, the road hub, and a first or last night rather than a week.
- KrujëSkanderbeg's hill town forty minutes from Tirana: a restored bazaar, a castle on the ridge, and the easiest half-day out of the capital.
- ShkodërThe northern hub: the castle above the lake, the 07:00 furgon to Theth, and the road to the Koman ferry. Almost every Alps trip passes through it twice.
This is the drive that starts and ends almost every northern trip: out of Tirana on the SH1, past Laç and Lezhë, into Shkodër. It is the fastest long road in the country and it is still not a motorway the whole way, which is the thing to hold in mind when the sat-nav offers a time.
Krujë is the stop worth making, about fifteen kilometres off the road on a hill to the east. It adds an hour or two and it is the only thing between the two ends that a first trip regrets missing.
Everything that makes the north hard is past Shkodër rather than on this leg. The ferry, the pass and the Theth road all have seasons; this road does not.
