Gamti Mountain

Two and a half hours above the Bovilla reservoir for the view everybody has seen in photographs, with a short rock step at the top that decides who gets it.

August: avoid. The hottest month, and the reservoir drops to its low mark.

Gamti is the quickest big view near Tirana: five kilometres, 300 m of climbing, two to three hours from the road end above the Bovilla reservoir. The path follows a ridge with the water on one side and the Tirana plain on the other, and finishes on a rock nose looking straight down at the dam.

The last twenty metres are a scramble rather than a walk. It is short and it is not exposed in any serious way, but it is rock, it is polished, and in the wet it is the difference between a family outing and a bad idea. Turn around at the shoulder and you still get most of the view.

The access road up from the Tirana side is the other filter. It is rough, it is worse after rain, and a low car will not enjoy it. March to November is the season, and April to May and September to October are the months when the ridge is neither baking nor slick.
