When it shuts
Typically closed mid-November to late March or early April. The dates move with the snow and nobody publishes them in advance, so a shoulder-month drive is a phone call to a guesthouse rather than a plan.
What to watch for
Paved does not mean wide. Single-lane sections with drops and no barrier, and the passing etiquette is local knowledge you will acquire quickly.
The last stretch into the valley holds ice long after Shkodër is warm, which is what actually decides the reopening date.
No fuel after Koplik in either direction, so the tank is a decision made before you start climbing.
Fuel
Fill up in Shkodër or Koplik. There is nothing dependable between Koplik and Theth, and that is about seventy kilometres of mountain road.
Stops · in driving order
- ShkodërThe northern hub: the castle above the lake, the 07:00 furgon to Theth, and the road to the Koman ferry. Almost every Alps trip passes through it twice.
- RazëmA forested plateau at around a thousand metres an hour north of Shkodër, cool enough in July to be the reason to drive up.
- BogëThe last real settlement on the Shkodra to Theth road, in a glacial valley ringed by 2,000 m peaks, and the natural stop that breaks the Alps drive.
- ThethA stone-church village on the floor of the Albanian Alps, at the end of a paved road that closes for the winter.

Until 2021 this was the drive that decided whether people came to Theth at all: a rough track that ate suspension and took most of a day. It is paved now, and the trip is a normal mountain drive on a road that climbs to the Qafa e Thorës and drops into the valley.
What has not changed is the season. The road shuts around the middle of November and reopens in late March or early April, and those dates move with the snow rather than with a calendar. Two more altitudes sit on the way up, and both are worth the stop: Razëm at around a thousand metres, and Bogë in its glacial valley under 2,000 m walls.
The router puts this at about three and a half hours, and that is the shape of it: ninety kilometres that drive like twice the distance.
