What to watch for

• This is the freight route to the North Macedonian border at Qafë Thanë, so the climb out of Tirana and the descent through the Shkumbin valley are shared with trucks that are slower than the road allows.

• The lake road north of Pogradec toward Lin is slow. That is the point of it rather than a problem, but it is not a stretch to make up time on.

• Voskopojë is twenty kilometres west of Korçë and a thousand metres higher, on a road that climbs steadily. It is slow rather than difficult in summer; in snow it is a different drive, and there is no useful bus either way.

Not a worry on the main run: Elbasan, Librazhd, Pogradec and Korçë are all on it. The side road up to Voskopojë is the one stretch with nothing on it, so fill up in Korçë before turning off.

The road east out of Tirana climbs over the hills behind the city, drops into the Shkumbin valley at Elbasan, and then follows the river upstream through Librazhd until the valley opens onto Lake Ohrid. It is the old Via Egnatia line and it is still the way through: Elbasan is about forty minutes from the capital and the through bus to Pogradec takes about two and a half hours end to end.

The lake arrives all at once near the border at Qafë Thanë, and the first thing worth stopping for is Lin, half an hour before Pogradec on a narrow peninsula with a sixth-century basilica and its floor mosaics on the hill above the village. Pogradec itself sits at about 695 m on the water, which is why the town is a summer relief rather than a summer ordeal.

From Pogradec the road turns south away from the lake and runs about forty minutes to Korçë, and from Korçë a slow climb west reaches Voskopojë on its plateau. This is the corridor that inverts the country's calendar: it is at its best in May and June and again in September and October, when the Riviera is either not ready or not bearable, and it is the only drive here where winter is a reason to come rather than a reason to wait.

One number on this page needs its context. The router puts the drive at a little over four hours, while the bus timetable implies about three: the difference is partly the turn out to Lin and back, which a through service does not make, and partly that OSM's speed data reads this road more cautiously than a driver who knows it does. Both figures are honest about different things. Plan the day on the router's, and be pleasantly surprised.
